The first Hublot at Sea (and surprise Watchmaker event) !

The First ever Hublot Boutique at Sea!

I just wanted to share a few 'live' pics from my vacation. I'm currently sailing onboard the Quantum of the Seas cruise ship.  Its the newest, most-technologically advanced ship in the Royal Caribbean Int'l fleet.

Just minutes after boarding my cruise and even before I stepped into my stateroom, we toured the main promenade area on deck 4 and found  a display for Hublot watches.  I was really excited to see this sign for an event on Day 2 at sea for the Hublot Academy VIP event.

I was the first person to sign up for the event and chatted with the sales representative for a few minutes to find out more information on this event.  It turns out that deck 4 watch store sells Hublot and several other brands such as Cartier, IWC and Omega.  But more importantly there is a dedicated Hublot watch boutique on deck 5 as well.

The Hublot event included an interview with the Captain but even better was the fact that Hublot had an onboard watchmaker to take about the movements.  Plus there were special pieces brought to the ship for the boutique.  Not much details but this was all excellent news and I was really look forward to attending.

Before I get into the details about the event, I wanted to mention that the Quantum of the Seas is a new ship from the Royal Caribbean fleet.  It first set sail in late October 2014 and has a lot of 'firsts' in the cruising industry.  Everything is done by ipads in the restaurants.  Guests are provided with wristbands (reminds me of swatches) that has all my info and can open my doors and even charge drinks.  There's a iFly (RipCord) indoor skydiving simulator.  In the SeaPlex activities center, they offer bumper cars!  And they even have enhanced wifi where internet connectivity is really fast.  So I wanted to test this out and post a few live pics onboard the ship.

Another 'first' of course is the Hublot Boutique.  The concept started nearly 2 years ago between Hublot and RCI and it was decided to debut on the Quantum of the Seas as the first ever dedicated watch boutique ever (note the other at the same time is Bulgari which is situated next to Hublot).

So on day 2 right at 12:00pm I stopped by the Hublot Boutique for the event.  It started with an introduction by Jimmy Rhodes, who is the Cruise Director and is in charge of all the fun activities.  He was joined by the Captain of the ship, Schrecko "Felix" Ban.  Both had just returned from a 2 month vacation and both were glad to be back on the Quantum.  Jimmy was really enjoying a blinged out Hublot Big Bang and mentioned that he is will be wearing a different Hublot each day.  Since he is very visible and active on the cruise I'll see if I can do a scavenger hunt and find out which watch he is wearing.  Anyway, The Captain was also wearing a gold Big Bang for the event.  Felix announced that he is typically a Breitling fan and has been for over 10 years, but he is very committed on getting a Hublot with a blue dial for his next watch.

Hublot Watchmaker on Board at the Hublot Boutique aboard the Quantum of the Seas!

Joining Jimmy and Felix was Susanna W. a master watchmaker from Hublot.  There were several special watches brought for this event, but in my opinion having Susanna was the real highlight.  She allowed the Captain and several guests to her table to disassemble a Hublot Big Bang watch.

The first task that Susanna assigned to the Captain was the remove the front screw from the bezel and the case.  This is the signature "H" shaped screw on the front of the watch. Susanna expertly demonstrated how to hold the specialized tool and then use a tweezer to lift off the screw.

The Captain was nervous, and after seeing how tiny the parts were, he joked that he would mess things up and wouldn't be able to put it all back together.  luckily Susanna was very patient and great at explain the process.

Over the course of the day, the cruise ship guests were welcomed to stop by and try their hands on assembling and disassembling the watch while Susanna overlooked their work.  I think she did a great job presenting and explaining the movements, and she made the event a lot of fun.  I noticed that all the attendees were having a great time and found the event informative, and learned a lot more to appreciate their watches.  I really think that Hublot put on an excellent event and brought more people to the brand while making it fun.

For me I was surprised by the Hublot Big Bang Red Magic Carbon.  This is the first time that I've handled this watch in person, and I really like the red tinted sapphire crystal and the carbon fiber case and bezel.  More pics and details on this watch in a separate post.

Hope you enjoyed this post about the first Hublot Boutique at sea, and the watchmaking event on board the ship!

Regards,

ED-209

... not having been on any extended period of time on the cruise, this must be so interesting (as I may get bored of the "activities" on it). Great idea, Hublot! Thanks for the report from your vacation, Ed! Ken

good exposure

Thanks Ken. I didn't think I would enjoy cruises (this is my second one). But these big ships have so many activities that I almost can do them all over 8 days. I agree with you, it's a great idea to have these as it exposes more people to the Hublot bran...

Not a bad idea. No where to run.

I hope Susanna the watchmaker is enjoying her cruise onboard. I didn't see her yesterday when I passed by the Hublot boutique. Maybe I'll try the beach LOL. Regards, ED-209

The Quantum of the Seas looks amazing. It is the first of the 3 RC Quantum class ships. I had heard about some of the features but a Hublot Boutique tops the list! I saw the Allure docked in Cozumel, it also looked like a great innovative ship. Thanks for...

Thanks Michael, how was your trip?

Very cool, we were on the Allure last year. How did you enjoy your cruise? Regards, ED-209

I had never even heard of them doing this before, but guess I shouldn't be surprised as the brand is always up to new things and ideas. Looks like a lot of fun! Cheers Andrew

Thanks Andrew, it was cool to find out about this new concept of having the on board boutique. We're having a lot of fun on the ship. And thumbs up to the staff as they were very knowledgeable and friendly to the guests. Regards, ED-209

Cruise ships are an excellent place to engage collectors of all levels...

 By: jmpTT : April 1st, 2015-20:12
The demographic of the typical cruise wouldn't overlap with Hublot's, or so I thought. Of course the Quantum is large enough and more tech savvy, so we're getting closer to future Hublot collectors. I'm impressed at how Hublot has grown the brand out from...

Just like in the other post

Thanks for sharing your thoughts jmpTT. It's interesting about watches on board. This is my second cruise (first one was Allure of the Seas last year) and they also had a similar presentation about buying watches that MichaelC posted recently on our PPro ...

Nice report

That is so cool regarding a floating boutique. Thanks for the Hublot report. I have to ask-any Oceanographics for sale on board there? :)

Thanks, and about the Hublot Oceanographics

 By: ED209 : April 2nd, 2015-13:44
Thanks sschew, had one and they should have let a few us try out the Oceanographic 4000 in either the Bahamas or CocoCay Island! :) The watchmaking event was cool, I skipped lunch to attend it (not like there's not enough food places on a cruise ship LOL)...

Much appreciated report

Did the example watch still run after being dissembled and assembled so many times?

Will the watch still run?

 By: ED209 : April 2nd, 2015-13:38
Thanks kolosstt for reading the post. I'm sure Susanna the watchmaker is great at her job, so I'm confident that it will be assembled back in good working order and running fine So if you were on a cruise and saw the ad for the watchmaker event, how likel...

100% likelihood!

Sounds like an excellent idea. As watchmaking is in a certain way part of my daily routine. So why shouldn't it be exercised at such an event?! The Quantum class has something 4000 passenger capacity, so i think that it is a good idea to have some kind of...

large capacity

I'm hoping this extends out to other cruise ships. The new ship Anthem of the Seas will be taking over in Port Liberty while Quantum moves to Asia. I hope that the Allure and Oasis class ships (over 6000 passengers!) can have the Hublot boutiques on the n...

Wow Hublot event and boutique on the sea!

We enjoyed our cruise especially the visit to CocoCay Island. Water was so tranquil and clear. Thanks for reading the post. I had a nice chat with the staff on my last night of the cruise and got some great feedback. Regards, ED-209

They had a watchmaker on board? How cool is that!

 By: DRMW : April 6th, 2015-22:44
Sounds like a great concept. When on vacation, it is always cool to have some kind of momento to bring home and this seems perfect. Very cool to have an actual watchmaker on site, must have been a great experience for watch collectors and newbies. Thanks ...

Having the watchmaker was a great experience for everyone

 By: ED209 : April 6th, 2015-22:47
I noticed that Susanna the Hublot watchmaker was in the main promenade on deck 4 on several days during the cruise presenting the demonstration of the watch case and movement disassembly. I saw families stopping by and shown interested in the watch moveme...

I just found out that the sister ship "Anthem of the Seas" will also have a Hublot Boutique. Hopefully they will do one of those events when I cruise this Winter!

That is exciting news
