No better day to examine the 45mm Aero Fusion Pele Ceramic than today!

Friends, in a few hour hours, the 2014 World Cup will officially begin in Brazil, with the host country taking on Croatia.  Hublot, the official timekeeper for FIFA, launched a 500 piece limited edition in honor of arguably the greatest soccer player in the history of the world, Pele.  We are not going to debate that point here, but let's have a closer look at Hublot's Limited Edition Pele Ceramic reference number 525.CM.0179.VR.PEL14.

This watch is predominantly black with yellow accents.  The case size is 45mm, and for this version it is all executed with black ceramic.  A soccer ball motif is utilized behind the continuous seconds counter at 3:00.  At 9:00 is the 30 minute chronograph counter, and of course the long center mounted yellow needle times the chronograph seconds.  I happen to really like a 2 subdial watch, even though many chronograph fans expect more than a 30 minute record time.

The dial on this watch is basically clear with the painted markings, allowing the user to view the top side of the selfwinding movement (42 hour power reserve).  A circular date disc passes over a white patch at 6:00 to allow for the date to be legible.  Two important things to note here.  The first, number 10 appears in yellow in homage to Pele.  Second, and more important as a design element, the date disc does not share the same center point as the rest of the dial.  It sits a little lower than center, and this allows Hublot to create a very unique and interesting sub dial structure.

The soccer ball motif continues as a pattern embossed into the black calf and rubber strap.  It is subtle but noticeable.  The yellow stitching is quite bold, and congruent with the use of the color elsewhere.

And how about a screening of the famous Pele bicycle kick on the back.  Very cool.  I also like the yellow markings on the caseback, again consistent with the rest of the watch.

The watch is supplied with a signed Pele shirt.  I do credit Hublot here for supplying a unique accessory with the watch.  Too many times a "Limited Edition" is nothing more than a new dial color.  This piece seems to be well thought out by the Hublot Team.

On the wrist I found it quite comfortable.  Even though it is listed at 45mm, it does not feel that large in comparison to other watches with similar sizes.  Another point to mention here is the use of both brushed and polished finishes.  Of course, Hublot is not the only company that does this, but I am a big fan of multiple finishes on a watch.  Especially on an all black one, as the few polished areas really reflect light and add a touch of pop to an otherwise discreet piece.

I was definitely impressed with this Limited Edition from Hublot.  Actually, the Aero Fusion Chronograph in general is a splendid piece, and after seeing them in person for the first time, there is a lot to like about them.  I would need to see them again, but I left thinking I liked the collection more than the Big Bang line.

Thanks to the wonderful staff of the Hublot Boutique in Bal Harbour, FL.  The were quite delightful in answering my many question about this watch and others.

Now, it is even closer to the start of the World Cup, so make sure you have your time changes correct and let's get it on!

Just not the strap... to me it just looks a bit 'cheap'. Great review though and I am sure Brazil is World Cup fever just waiting for it to start... however I suggest that potential purchasers do not wear it on the streets of Rio :) Thanks for sharing, An...

I defintiely agree about not

wearing it on the streets. I heard there was a clash even before the game started.

They have been giving guests...

For the Brazilian soccer fan especially, how could you pass on such a creation?
