Hands on review of the Hublot King Power Paris Saint-Germain

Mar 09, 2014,13:23 PM

First of all regarding the Hublot King Power Paris Saint-Germain, it is very important for people who don't know European football (soccer) some elements of context.

Paris Saint-Germain is one of the most famous French team and obviously, the club based in the capital. It was one of top French clubs even if its records are far from other clubs like Marseille. But in 2011, everything changed: Qatar Investment Authority purchased the club and started to invest a lot in order to give it more ambition in France but also... and in priority in Europe.

For more than 2 years, several prestigious players like Zlatan Ibrahimovic or Thiago Silva have joined the team  and we could feel it by analyzing the latest results: French champion last year, quarter of finalist of the European Cup last year, almost already qualified to the quarters again this year with the objective, why not, to win the Cup and to be at the same level than clubs like FC Bayern Munchen or Chelsea or Real Madrid.

At the end of 2013, Hublot and Paris Saint-Germain represented by its president Nasser Al-Khelaïfi signed a partnership. And a few days ago, one  side of this partnership came to reality with the presentation of the King Power Paris Saint-Germain.

To be frank with you, I'm sure that the Hublot team didn't spend a lot of time to create this watch since they perfectly know the recipe already used with the King Power Bayern Munich, Juventus or Manchester United amongst others... Hublot combines:

- the powerful King Power 48mm case
- a skeletonized dial
- a chronograph with two central hands and a 45mn minutes counter (the length of a soccer half-time)
- the colours of the club
- the logo of the club at 3 o'clock.

I have to confess that this King Power Paris Saint-Germain is far from being the worst. I thought that the Juventus one was too black and white, that the Manchester and the Bayern Munchen ones were... too red... and at least for my taste, the watch dedicated to the Paris Saint-Germain is maybe the most balanced since the blue, red and white colours combine pretty well with the microbasted black ceramic case. You will also notice the colours of the pushers which are in coherence with the dial.

Despite the numerous colours and the skeletonized dial, the watch has a rather good legibility even if the scale of the peripheral minutes counter is a bit too overlaborate. The two central hands of the chronograph can be easily differentiated thanks to their specific ends.

The watch is powered, like the other similar King Power, by the HUB4245 movement which is actually a Valjoux 7750 built and modified in-house. It is the reason why the performances of this movement are the usual ones with a 4hz frequency and a power reserve of 42 hours.

The finishings of the movement are neat but not very enjoyable except the black finishing of the hollowed winding rotor. I think that I would have preferred a solid caseback with an engraving in relationship with the Paris Saint-Germain. Anyway, we all know the story: a watch becomes commercially easier to be sold when the movement is visible even if it doesn't have anything special.

Thanks to the microblasted black ceramic case,  the watch looks a bit smaller than it is actually. But well... with a 48mm diameter, the case is powerful! And come on, you would not expect to see Zlatan Ibrahimovic with a nice little 3 hands watch! One of the biggest assets of Hublot is their ability to create comfortable and easy to wear watches. And once again, the mission is achieved!

Even with its bulky size, the watch is very comfortable on the wrist thanks to the efficient strap and folding clasp. You can shake the arm and the wrist, the watch will not move! A good surprise.

Obviously, the watch is mainly dedicated to the fans of the Paris Saint-Germain: if I take my own example, I'm a strong lover of one of its competitors so even if I'm paid, I think that I will not wear it! When it comes to soccer, there is no compromise! And I have other Hublot priorities. Because the price tag is around 19,400 EUR and I consider that at this price... or even lower, there are several Hublot watches which attract me more than this King Power.

So the question is: who will buy it? The usual Paris Saint-Germain fan? No, I think that he can't imagine that a watch dedicated to its club would cost around 20K EUR. I think that the answer can be found in Qatar: due to the investment from  QIA and the dedication of Nasser Al-Khelaïfi as president of the club, I think that more customers will come from this Emirate rather from Paris...

For Hublot, this partnership and this watch are the proof of a good strategic move: they can surf on the wave of a club which has a strong ambition in Europe. It is very positive for the fame of the brand in France and maybe in other countries.

The King Power Paris Saint-Germain is available in a LE of 200 pieces sold with a set which includes a jersey with the signatures of the players.

Thanks a lot to the staff of the Hublot Boutique located Place Vendôme for the warm welcome.

Pros:

+ a quite good combo of colours

+ the comfort on the wrist

+ the two central hands of the chronograph

+ the jersey with the signatures of the players

Cons:

+ a solid caseback would have been a better option

+ the minutes scale of the chronograph are a bit too complicated to read

Not a huge football fan and do not follow football clubs, but as an idea for Mr. JCB, how about a partnership with some of the best known nightclubs in the world ? It would be interesting to see a Hublot King Power Bhudda Bar watch or a Panic Room Limited...

There are already some partnerships with famous places...
